Teamwork, Team building, High Performance Teams and Work Groups

The importance of understanding the differences in terminology about teams is to avoid the temptation to try to be something that does not serve the purpose of the organization. The value of teams can be circumscribed within an organization in a manner that fits its purpose. Team development is not intended to be the purpose but rather the tool that helps the organization achieve its purpose.

Teamwork - occurs within and across units (cross-functional) and at all levels. It is a broad reference to common values and positive benefits to an organization but does not mean that the whole organization will function as a team.

High Performance Teams - have a specific purpose, a specific, performance outcome. Teams with smaller numbers of participants can more effectively develop healthy working relationships that strengthen team effort. The more closely knit the members of the team, the more likely that they can function at optimum levels of their capability. The astronauts of Apollo XIII, your favorite symphony orchestra, and great professional sports teams are examples.

Workgroups - are groups of people who gather together to share information, compare best practices and offer ideas to each other regarding their respective work goals.
